William D. Berry was one of North America’s outstanding wildlife artists. Living in the Fairbanks and the Denali areas of Alaska from the 1950’s till his untimely death in 1979, he did most his research and sketching in the field and worked with a naturalist’s affection and knowledge. Of his pictorial Alaska Map, he said “Most of the truly arctic mammals and birds on the map are taken from sketches made on a trip to Point Hope. We saw bowhead and right whales, seals, eiders, and many other birds and flowers. Its was a rare opportunity to see these animals and plants in their proper environments as well as to participate in some of the Inupiaq activities. The little whaling scene is from a drawing made at the time of the actual strike.” The moose, caribou, bear, and other subjects were observed and sketched in and around Denali National Park, on trips to Glacier Bay National Park, Southeastern and other areas of Alaska.
